IMAGE UTILITY ENHANCEMENT
The Image Utility has some important new enhancements in version 3.9.
Zoom To Width of Window Button
Let's see how we can zoom an image to fit the width of the window:1. Press Links\Images.
2. Press Edit\Link.
3. Choose an image file that you have stored somewhere on your computer. For example, enter BIGLOGO.BMP, which ships with Welford Chart Notes. This image only fills part of the screen, in the upper left.
3. Press the Zoom to Width of Window button![]()
4. Note that the picture now fills the width of the Image Utility window. (You can also resize the Image Utility window itself by dragging its edges with your mouse). You may not be able to see the entire height of the image, but you can scroll down to see the bottom of it.
This feature is handy if you want to read a document. Expanding the document to the width of the screen makes the text easier to read. You can then scroll down to see the bottom of the document.
Apply Special Effects Button
Let's try altering the image using some special effects.1. Press the Apply Special Effects button. ![]()
2. Press the Blur tab. Set the value to 10. Press the Preview button to see the image blurred.
3. Press the Reload button to restore the image to its original appearance.
4. Press the Engrave tab. Set the value to 10. Press the Preview to see the image converted. Press Reload.
5. Press the Enhance tab. Set Gamma Red to 100 to see the image turn pink. Press Reload.
6. Press the Jiggle tab. Set the Period to 50, Amp to 10, and Shape to Sine. Press Reload.
7. Press the Mosaic tab. Press Preview. (You might want to play around with some of the settings). Press Reload.
8. Press the Page Curl tab. Press Preview. Press Reload.
9. Press the Rotate tab. Set it to 90 degrees. Press Preview, then Reload.
10. Press the Sharp tab. Set it to 5. Press Preview, then Reload. This feature is particularly useful if you have a slightly blurry picture that you want to sharpen.
11. Press the Tile Maker tab. Press Preview, then Reload.
12. Press the Whirlpool tab. Set the Value to 100. Press Preview, then Reload.
Note that the program permits a number of other effects. You may wish to experiment with the others as well to see what they do. The Sharp and Hue and Saturation effects can be very helpful in improving the quality of a blurry or discolored image. The Bright effect can brighten a dim image that might otherwise be unreadable. The Despeckle effect can remove imperfections in the image. Note also that you can combine one effect after another to the same image. Simply press Apply after each one instead of Reload.
Note that each of the tabbed functions can also be activated using the Image, Deformation, and Correction menus.
Note that you can apply an effect to just one portion of the image. For example:
1. Make sure the left hand button reads Hide Selection. If it says Show Selection, press it to change it to read Hide Selection.
2. The image starts with a rectangle which is the "selection". It runs along the entire height and width of the image.
3. You can drag the selection rectangle around by clicking on it and then dragging your mouse around. You can do this to expose at least one edge of the rectangle.
4. Move your mouse to the visible edge of the rectangle. The mouse changes to a double line. Drag your mouse to expand or shrink the size of the selection rectangle in a direction.
5. You can continue doing steps 3 and 4 until you have arranged the selection rectangle to be in the position and size you want to use.
6. Now, choose any of the effects you want to use, and they are applied only to the selection rectangle, not to the entire image.
Here are what the buttons do:
·
Reload: returns the image to the way it was when you first opened the Filters and Effects window.·
Preview: lets you see the effect on the image before committing to doing it.·
Apply: keeps the effect on the image. Note that you can apply multiple effects before leaving the Filters and Effects window.·
Stop: stops a lengthy Preview or Apply process before its completion.·
Close and Save: keeps all of the changes you have applied and closes the Filters and Effects window, returning you to the Image Utility with this altered image loaded into the Image Utility.·
Cross to the right of the Close and Save button, or the File\Exit command, closes the Filters and Effects window without saving any of the changes you made.NEWS ON UPCOMING VERSIONS
