MEDCOM's LIS was designed to provide the modern physician
office laboratory (POL), private clinic, or small hospital with an
easy to use comprehensive program. MEDCOM's LIS interfaces with a
wide variety of clinical instruments and integrates the patient
orders and results and instrument controls into a single, cohesive
program, and helps the user comply with Clinical Improvement Act of
1988 (CLIA) regulations.
MEDCOM's LIS is designed to allow for multiple user interface
methods including keyboard, mouse and touch screen. Each function
has been scrutinized to be executed with the minimum number of steps
and clicks of the mouse to provide the modern physician office
laboratory (POL), private clinic, or small hospital with an easy to
use comprehensive program. Seamless integration with billing
and electronic medical records systems increases accuracy and speeds
processing of orders, results and billing.
System
Highlights
Scalability MEDCOM's LIS is
scaleable and provides for multi-site applications. In fact,
multiple labs can be integrated to assist with workflow
management. The main lab may support remote labs where the
remote lab performs some testing and the main lab performs testing
for the balance of the work. The complete order is
placed on the remote lab and the system automatically determines
what portion of the order is to be sent electronically to the main
lab. In effect the main lab becomes a seamless extension
of the remote lab. With this capability, growth will not be a
problem. If your initial needs are for a smaller system, you
can be comfortable that the system can scale to any size
needed. The MEDCOM Lab Information Manager contains a complete
database with patient demographics and full database functions such
as the ability to search and edit by name, ID, or accession number
and print results in many different formats. The reporting
capabilities are numerous (by physician, by location and by ordering
system) each with its own format. The patient database allows
the user to comply with CLIA patient record keeping
requirements.

Order
Management: With
managed care, patient specimens need to be sent to predetermined
labs for testing to comply with the agreements made between the
insurance companies and the various labs. The physician must see to
it that these agreements are supported. If not, the physician may be
responsible for the lab charges. It is therefore very helpful that
the MEDCOM Lab Manager integrates with the various testing labs and
sends the orders to the appropriate location. This test management
capability simplifies the processing of all lab work. Barcode
labels, packing lists and requisitions can be produced to identify
the specimens and document the orders.
MEDCOM recognized
the need for this test management capability in all doctors offices
and provides this test management capability as a stand-alone
product. This new product is perfect for test management in any
office with or without a lab. The chart below describes the
interconnectivity of MEDCOM Order Manager.

Medical
Necessity Alpha II Coder
assists the user with medical necessity determination for accurate
claims processing. If the test is not covered, an Advanced
Beneficiary Notification is provided for the patient to sign
indicating any tests that are not covered and notification the
patient is responsible for the charges. The Alpha II is
uniquely embedded within the MEDCOM Lab/Order Manager to automate
the alert process . The Alpha II can be purchased from MEDCOM
along with your order for the MEDCOM Lab/Order Manager
Systems. For more information see Unicor Medical Inc.'s tm.

Web Based and ASP MEDCOM
Information Systems provides a Web-based system for ordering lab
tests and viewing results. Access to a browser and Internet
connection is all that is needed. The secure site is
accessed with password protection and will not compromise your
security plan. Also, with multi-site labs, all remote sites
can easily be linked to the central lab. In a secure network,
or Intranet, the results are available for viewing and/or printing
at any time by any authorized person.

Paperless MEDCOM Lab
Manager is used to manage all patient test orders and the storage of
results. It is designed to replace paper-based systems and automate
the entire process of lab work from the time a doctor orders the
test to the time the results are returned to the doctor. Without
a computerized lab information system, doctors manually write out
lab requisitions to order specific tests. The requisition is
then carried or faxed to the lab. The lab performs the tests
and manually enters the results on a paper document which is carried
or faxed back to the doctor for review and then stored in the
patient chart. MEDCOM Lab Manager streamlines the whole process by
allowing the doctor or staff person to enter a lab order directly in
Welford Chart Notes (or other
charting system) for the patient, and the order is then
automatically sent to the MEDCOM Lab Manager. The lab results from
the analytical instruments are validated, released and
automatically sent back to the doctor and are updated in Welford Chart Notes or other
charting system. The whole process can be totally paperless
eliminating manual entry errors and greatly reducing the turnaround
time. In addition, lab charges can be automatically sent
to Edimis Practice Manager
(or other practice manager system) for automatic posting saving more
time and potential for errors.

Connectivity MEDCOM's
experience with a wide variety of nationally known laboratory
instrument manufacturers resulted in the development of a unique
programmable data-stream "translator" for instrument communication
and is the heart of the MEDCOM Laboratory Information System. This
exclusive "easy-link" concept permits the CLIA software and other
ancillary programs to be instantly tailored to virtually any number
of laboratory instruments or instrument combinations. The
Translator III is a unique BI-DIRECTIONAL
TRANSLATION engine developed to make the PC - INSTRUMENT READY. It
provides the user an economical alternative to expensive consultants
and programmers previously associated with instrument
interfacing. The Translator III is designed
to permit remote configuration via modem or the Internet. If
an instrument manufacturer changes the interface protocol used by
the MEDCOM LIS, the communications will break down.
MEDCOM can remotely connect to the LIS and correct the problem in
minutes with the Translator III interface
engine.
Full bi-directional integration with
billing and electronic medical records systems is equally simple
using the Translator III interface
engine. MEDCOM Information Systems, Inc. has interfaced to
numerous systems and promotes ASTM/HL7 standards to make
communications a simple and faster process. If those standards
are not being used, Translator III is equally
capable of handling the task. Look to MEDCOM Information Systems,
Inc. for your instrument interfacing for a totally automated
clinical laboratory.

Quality Control The
software integrates quality control functions, instrument
calibrations and the patient database into one comprehensive program
assisting in compliance with federal laws. Quality
control results are sent from the laboratory instrument to the
MEDCOM Lab Manager quality control database. By appropriate menu
selection, the laboratorian is given the opportunity to run and
store all controls in the database before patient results are
received, or....quality control can be performed along with the
patient orders for specific tests. The software has been designed
with flexibility to satisfy a wide variety of individual user
operations and time saving options. Out-of-Range QC is flagged
and the system warns the user of the condition and also suggests
appropriate action to be taken. The user can also include any
comments within the warning message and these comments will appear
in the records for review. Any test whose QC has failed and
has not been repeated is automatically taken out of the run. A
predefined range is used to determine whether the QC level passes or
fails. The user also has the option of using the Westgard rules for
monitoring QC's. Correlation studies can also be run
simultaneously with the primary controls. Mean and
standard deviation are calculated automatically. Automatic
Levey-Jennings Graph Presentation No more manual plotting of
graphs...QC results are automatically plotted in crisp, clean and
easy to understand Levey-Jennings color graphs. Additional run
statistics on each and all QC points are also shown with mean and CV
automatically calculated. Information on each run of all QC's is
clearly identified both graphically and numerically.
